Sweet Truths: Tales from the SugarWise Frontline

A Blog by Sania Bogere, Diabetes Nurse & SugarWise Lead at Kabukye Trust’s Bright Life Medical Centre
Welcome, friends!
If you’ve ever felt the weight of diabetes care—the urgency of a fluctuating glucose reading, the frustration of a missed insulin dose, or the quiet triumph of a child finally mastering their injection—then you’re in the right place. My name is Sania Bogere, and for the past three years, I’ve had the immense privilege of walking alongside our SugarWise Starlets (children with Type 1 Diabetes) and SugarWise Warriors (adults with Type 2 Diabetes) as they navigate the highs and lows of this condition.
This blog is my love letter to health workers and donors who understand that diabetes care isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people. It’s about the mother who learns to test her child’s blood sugar without fear, the farmer who realizes his fatigue isn’t just “getting older,” and the community health worker who spots the signs of DKA just in time.
Here, we’ll swap stories and strategies on:
✔ Screening smarter—because early detection saves limbs, sight, and lives.
✔ Treating holistically—because insulin alone isn’t enough without empathy, education, and a solid meal plan.
✔ Preventing complications—because no one should lose a foot to a treatable disease.
✔ Collaborating fiercely—because diabetes demands a team: nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, and you.
But most of all, we’ll celebrate the victories—big and small. Like when a Starlet proudly shows us her school report, or a Warrior brings his HbA1c down with a grin: “Sister Sania, we did it!”
So, whether you’re here to learnshare, or reignite your passion for diabetes care—pull up a chair. The work is hard, but the hope is sweeter.
Let’s get started.

P.S. Have a “Sweet Truth” of your own? Drop it in the comments. This frontline runs on solidarity.

Why “Sweet Truths”? Because in diabetes, the bitter realities (like stigma or stockouts) meet the sweet wins (like resilience and community). Let’s tell both stories—honestly, and together.
