Sugarwise Starlets reaches four districts.
Kabukye Trust's Sugarwise Starlets programme now operates in four districts across eastern Uganda. A $50,000 grant from the T1D Community Fund made the expansion possible.
The programme moved into Buyende and Luuka in 2023, adding to its existing presence in Kamuli and Jinja. Community navigators screened 124 children in the first phase. Sixty-four caregivers received training in blood-glucose management and nutrition.
A new HbA1c machine — which measures average blood sugar over three months — arrived at the Bright Life Medical Centre. For the first time, the team can track long-term control without sending samples to Kampala.
"Before, we were guessing," said Ivan Luweire, Programmes Manager. "Now we see the numbers. We know who is stable and who needs help."
The next phase will focus on reaching children in sub-counties where no screening has yet taken place.
