LEARNING DIFFERENCES

THE CHALLENGE

In Uganda, children with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other learning differences are often left behind due to a lack of teacher training, stigma, and rigid education systems. Many struggle silently, facing exclusion and poor academic outcomes.

Our Solution
The TLD Initiative, in partnership with Fana Ethiopia, empowers teachers with practical, culturally relevant tools to support neurodiverse learners. We combine inclusive teaching strategies, grassroots advocacy, and community engagement to create lasting change.

Key Components

  • Teacher Training & Neurodiversity Hubs – Educators receive mentorship and adaptive resources, including multilingual guides and evidence-based interventions like Orton-Gillingham (for dyslexia) and NumberSense (for dyscalculia).
  • Inclusive Whole-Class Strategies – Lessons designed for all learners, reducing stigma while improving outcomes.
  • Neurodiversity Clubs – Safe spaces where students build confidence, showcase strengths, and develop self-advocacy skills.
  •  Awareness Campaigns – Breaking stigma through TV, radio, and podcasts, reaching parents, schools, and policymakers.
  • Rigorous Research & Policy Influence – A randomised evaluation generates data to advocate for systemic change and scale what works.

Why It Matters

  • 1 in 5 learners may have a learning difference—yet most go unsupported.
  • Teachers lack training, leading to dropout rates, low confidence, and lost potential.
  • Inclusion benefits all students, not just neurodiverse learners.

Our Impact

  • 160 teachers trained across 20 schools
  • 2 neurodiversity hubs established
  • 80% improvement in literacy/numeracy for struggling learners
  • 10 community awareness sessions held
